CHAPTER TEN

JACK SWALLOWED THE last of his morning coffee, wishing it didn’t make him think of Avery and how her mouth always tasted after they’d shared espresso. Made him think of that first morning they’d spent together, that entire, magical day, and how beautiful and adorable she’d been. Realizing, from that moment on, he’d been fascinated by her in every way. Her looks, her brains, her personality.

He couldn’t shake that fascination and attraction. An attraction that had grown even deeper after their time together last night, making love again to her beautiful body. Except his heart rate had barely slowed when the phone call had come, bringing a lot of questions with it. A harsh reminder of what he kept forgetting whenever he was with her. Which was that mixing business with pleasure was always one hell of a bad idea, no matter how incredible that pleasure was.

He thought he’d learned that painful lesson all too well. A lesson that had come in the form of doubt cast on his professional character and integrity, resulting in some very personal questions from a hospital ethics board. A lesson in why he should never get involved with a woman connected in any way with his work. Except he knew Avery was nothing like Vanessa. She wasn’t the kind of woman who would advance her own career at the expense of someone else’s.

He took the elevator to the hospital’s administrative offices on the top floor, where Bob had a nice, cushy office that someone had clearly given up for him. About to knock on the doorjamb, he was surprised to hear Avery’s voice speaking through the partially open door, then the rumble of Bob’s voice in answer.

He knocked on the door and didn’t wait to be asked in before pushing it all the way open to step inside. Timkin looked up, then stood, a broad smile on his face. “Jack. Thanks for coming. Have a seat.”

“I’m good standing, thanks.”

“Dr. Girard was just updating me on the patient data from the trial so far.”

“Seems impossible to have any kind of real report, considering we’ve operated on all of twelve patients so far.”

“Well, yes. But all of them came through it nicely, I see.”

“Actually, that’s not entirely true,” Avery said. “Several of the patients have had significant paravalvular regurgitation, as Dr. Dunbar and I have discussed.”

“And in that discussion I noted that a certain percentage of patients are expected to have that complication and can live fine with it.” His chest began to burn a little. Was she about to tell Timkin she thought there might be a flaw in the design? He was confident that Bob was completely behind this trial and the next phase of the rollout to other hospitals.

“We do know that is a normal, and expected, complication, Dr. Girard,” Timkin said. “While I’m aware the numbers of patients experiencing that are currently slightly higher than we would have wished, the procedure hasn’t been done on nearly enough patients for those numbers to be meaningful.
